Frequently Asked Questions

Craniosacral therapy may be unfamiliar to many clients, and you may have questions about what to expect, how it works, and whether it’s right for you. This FAQ section is designed to provide clear answers and help you feel informed and comfortable before your first session.

What is craniosacral therapy (CST)?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive manual therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system—the tissues and fluids that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This vital system affects the performance of the central nervous system.

Everyday stresses, strains, and physical traumas can cause tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. This can create barriers to the healthy performance of the central nervous system. Using a soft touch, practitioners release these restrictions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct.

CST is commonly sought out by individuals experiencing:

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Neck and back tension

  • Jaw discomfort (TMJ-related symptoms)

  • Stress-related tension

  • Fatigue

  • Nervous system overwhelm

CST is not a replacement for medical care but may be used as a complementary approach to support overall well-being.

2

What can I expect during a session?

You will typically lie on a massage table while the therapist uses light touch to assess and support the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and the nervous system’s balance. Many clients describe the experience as deeply relaxing.

3

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, overall health, and response to therapy. Some clients feel noticeable benefits after just one session, while others may schedule multiple sessions over several weeks or months.

4

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session.

5

Is it appropriate to tip for a session?

Tipping isn’t accepted. Just as you wouldn’t tip a doctor, dentist, or other licensed healthcare professional, payment for sessions covers all services provided.

6

How is craniosacral therapy different from massage therapy?

Unlike massage, CST uses very light touch and focuses on subtle movements in the craniosacral system rather than deep muscle manipulation. While your therapist has a clinical background in occupational therapy, CST is not a substitute for occupational or physical therapy or other medically necessary care.

7

Will I feel immediate results?

Some clients notice relaxation or tension release right away, while others may experience gradual changes over several sessions. Every body responds differently, and benefits often continue to unfold after the session.

8

Is there anyone who shouldn’t receive craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is gentle and safe for most people, though there are some situations where it may not be appropriate. Prior to your first session, your therapist will gather information about your medical history to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.
