Frequently Asked Questions

Lymphatic drainage therapy may be unfamiliar to many clients, and you may have questions about what to expect, how it works, and whether it’s right for you. This FAQ section is designed to provide clear answers and help you feel informed and comfortable before your first session.

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the body’s internal housekeeping and immune function. Lymphatic fluid moves throughout the body, carrying immune cells and helping transport excess fluid, proteins, and cellular waste so they can be processed and cleared.

Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump. It relies on movement and muscle activity, along with the body’s natural rhythms, to keep fluid flowing. When that flow becomes sluggish — whether due to stress, inactivity, surgery, or injury — swelling, heaviness, or delayed recovery can occur.

What is lymphatic drainage therapy?

Lymphatic drainage therapy is a gentle, non-invasive technique that uses light, rhythmic touch to encourage healthy fluid movement throughout the body. Sessions are calm and intentional, designed to support the body’s natural recovery processes, enhance lymphatic flow, and promote a sense of ease.

This work is often sought out by individuals experiencing:

  • Fluid retention, puffiness, or a feeling of heaviness

  • Recovery after surgery (including cosmetic, orthopedic, or cesarean procedures)

  • Preparation for an upcoming surgery

  • Swelling during pregnancy

  • Periods of physical inactivity or extended rest

  • Post-exercise recovery

  • Seasonal congestion or sinus pressure

  • Symptoms related to perimenopause or menopause

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Stress-related tension

  • A desire to support overall wellness and balance

At Ripple Wellness, lymphatic drainage therapy is offered as a complementary wellness service to support comfort, recovery, and overall well-being. Services are not intended for the treatment or active management of lymphedema or other conditions requiring medically necessary care. If you are seeking treatment for lymphedema, you are welcome to reach out and I’d be happy to help connect you with appropriate resources.

What can I expect during a session?

Sessions are unhurried, quiet, and tailored to your comfort. Depending on the area being treated, clothing may be adjusted as needed for treatment access, with privacy and comfort maintained at all times. You will typically lie on a massage table while the practitioner uses gentle, rhythmic techniques to support lymphatic flow and encourage relaxation. Many clients describe the experience as soothing, restorative, and deeply calming.

3

How many sessions will I need?

The number and frequency of lymphatic drainage sessions depends on your individual goals, how your body responds to treatment, and overall presentation. Some clients notice a sense of lightness and relaxation after a single session, while others choose to schedule a series of sessions over time to support ongoing well-being.

If you have not previously received lymphatic drainage, or if there has been a prolonged period since your last treatment, your first session may include a combination of gentle preparatory techniques with a shorter period of lymphatic drainage, as tolerance and response can vary between individuals. This allows your body to acclimate to the work and helps the therapist assess your response so sessions can be appropriately tailored moving forward.

4

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to disrobe or partially disrobe to allow for optimal skin contact, though draping is always used to maintain privacy and comfort. Clothing adjustments can also be made based on your preference and comfort level. For ease of access, clients often choose shorts for lower body work and a tank top or sports bra for upper body treatment. Very tight or restrictive clothing (such as compression-style activewear) can limit comfort and make it more difficult to perform treatment effectively, so more relaxed clothing is preferred when possible.

5

Is it appropriate to tip for a session?

Tipping isn’t accepted. Just as you wouldn’t tip a doctor, dentist, or other licensed healthcare professional, payment for sessions covers all services provided.

6

How is lymphatic drainage therapy different from massage therapy?

Unlike deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage uses very light, rhythmic techniques rather than deep muscle manipulation. Sessions support lymphatic flow while promoting relaxation.

While your practitioner has a background in occupational therapy, lymphatic drainage focuses specifically on the lymphatic system and is not a substitute for occupational or physical therapy or other medically necessary care.

Ripple Wellness does not provide care for individuals seeking management of lymphedema. If you need support finding a certified lymphedema therapist, please reach out—I’m happy to help connect you with local resources.

7

Will I feel immediate results?

Some clients feel immediate relief, such as reduced puffiness or tension, while others notice more gradual changes over several sessions. Every body responds differently, and the effects of lymphatic drainage may continue to unfold in the hours or days following a session. Many clients report a deep sense of relaxation on the day of treatment, followed by a feeling of increased energy the next day.

8

Is there anyone who shouldn’t receive lymphatic drainage massage?

Lymphatic drainage sessions are gentle and safe for most people, but there are certain conditions where extra caution may be needed. Before your first session, the practitioner will review your health history and any concerns to ensure that lymphatic support is appropriate and safe for you.
