Frequently Asked Questions

If you're new to myofascial release, you may have questions about what it is, what a session feels like, and whether it may be helpful for your concerns. This FAQ section is designed to provide clear answers and help you feel informed and comfortable before your first appointment. Myofascial release is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the body's connective tissue system (fascia) to address areas of restriction, support mobility, and reduce tension. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a gentle, hands-on therapy that addresses restrictions within the body's connective tissue system, known as fascia. These restrictions may contribute to pain, tension, postural imbalances, and decreased mobility. Rather than using forceful pressure, myofascial release uses sustained, gentle engagement with the tissues to encourage release and improve freedom of movement. Each session is individualized to your unique presentation and goals.

2

What can I expect during a session?

Sessions are calm, quiet, and tailored to your comfort. You will typically lie on a treatment table while gentle, sustained pressure is applied to areas of fascial restriction based on your individual needs and presentation. Depending on the area being treated, clothing may be adjusted as needed for treatment access, with privacy and comfort maintained at all times. Unlike deep tissue massage, myofascial release does not rely on forceful pressure. Instead, gentle techniques are used to address restrictions within the fascial system and support improved comfort, mobility, and overall well-being.

3

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, overall health, and response to the work. Some clients notice benefits after one session, while others schedule multiple sessions over time to support ongoing wellness and symptom relief.

4

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to disrobe or partially disrobe to allow for optimal skin contact, though draping is always used to maintain privacy and comfort. Clothing adjustments can also be made based on your preference and comfort level. For ease of access, clients often choose shorts for lower body work and a tank top or sports bra for upper body treatment. Very tight or restrictive clothing (such as compression-style activewear) can limit comfort and make it more difficult to perform treatment effectively, so more relaxed clothing is preferred when possible.

5

Is it appropriate to tip for a session?

Tipping isn’t accepted. Just as you wouldn’t tip a doctor, dentist, or other licensed healthcare professional, payment for sessions covers all services provided.

6

How is myofascial release different from massage therapy?

While both myofascial release and massage therapy involve hands-on treatment, they differ in their focus and approach. Massage therapy often uses rhythmic strokes and techniques directed toward muscles and soft tissues. Myofascial release focuses specifically on the fascial system, using gentle, sustained pressure to address areas of restriction that may contribute to pain, tension, or limited mobility. Rather than working through a series of massage strokes, practitioners may spend several minutes engaging a single area to allow the tissues time to respond.

7

Will I feel immediate results?

Some clients notice relaxation, ease, or changes in tension right away, while others experience gradual shifts over time. Every body responds differently, and benefits may continue to unfold after the session.

8

Is there anyone who shouldn't receive myofascial release?

Myofascial release uses gentle, sustained pressure and is appropriate for most individuals. Prior to your first session, the therapist will review your health history and discuss any current medical conditions, injuries, or concerns to help determine whether myofascial release is appropriate for you. In some situations, treatment may need to be modified or deferred based on your individual circumstances.
